And The Word…

Communication is really the central theme to our existence, it’s so fascinating to me how it’s one of the first things we ignore. Language is communication, and learning a new language stretches our ability and method of communication in such a huge way. True, nonverbal communication is so important in daily living, but there is something special about words that can’t be denied, no matter what academia would like to do to dismiss and deconstruct it.

Approaching language or communication as a Christian I wonder if there isn’t something that I’m missing. I had started studying Communication in a Christian college, yet there was nothing in that curriculum to give me a clue to what it is that is missing. I have this sort of undefined feeling on the subject, and I wonder if i could grasp a hold of it better if I could just get moving forward with my Chinese.

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 NKJV

Somehow in this verse in the book of John is a whole Theory of Communication, one to cast aside the words of McLuhan, and Barthes, and Kant. Or, if not to cast it aside, to give it true meaning.
